My name is Maggie Barbour and I am a senior in The George Washington University School of Business. I’m a marketing major with a minor in speech, language, and hearing sciences. Prior to starting my undergraduate studies, I hadn't realized the extent to which language truly is a critical, and sometimes contentious, topic in our society. Becoming aware of this is what led me to build a passion for this area of study. I’m excited to work as a writing intern with The Niche Movement and inspire others to explore their passions.
Why are you becoming a part of The Niche Movement community?
I am becoming a part of The Niche Movement because finding your niche is something all young people can benefit from, but isn’t prioritized. The Niche Movement’s dedication towards sharing advice, growth, and storytelling is hard to find in the rat-race of the world today.
The start to my college experience often felt lost; I hadn’t decided on a major while it seemed like my other peers had their entire career plan figured out. Now as a senior, I find myself much more confident in myself and my interests. I’m excited to become part of The Niche Movement and encourage other young professionals to dedicate the time they need to figure out their passion.
Where do you hope to be in five years?
I hope to eventually work on a marketing team in a creative industry, like retail or a magazine company. Ideally, I would end up on the West Coast, but finding a career that I’m passionate about is my top priority. I hope to work with a small team that places emphasis on creativity, collaboration, and passion. Although I may not have a step by step career plan written down, I’m working on it.
What do you like to do in your free time?
Currently located in my hometown of Mill Valley, just north of San Francisco, I have been able to take advantage of the beautiful outdoor scene the area has to offer, such as the gorgeous mountains. I’ve always loved getting outside whether it’s for a walk downtown for coffee, a run, or a long hike. During the pandemic and with the start of virtual courses, I’ve been trying to maximize my time outside, even if it means just a quick walk between classes.
Who inspires you?
Michelle Obama. If you haven’t read her memoir, Becoming, I highly suggest doing so because it’s very well written, moving, and inspirational. She is an incredibly accomplished, successful woman from her own merit. Her relentless advocacy for key issues like health, poverty, and education is incredibly admirable, and reminds me there is always more work to be done. A feminist icon, strong leader, and dedicated advocated for key issues, Michelle Obama serves as a true inspiration to many women.
